Here are the techniques weβll cover in this 30 day class:
Dry brush technique, beginning with walnut ink and building up to full color
A mixed media approach using a ballpoint pen underdrawing, and layering ink, watercolor and gouache
Glazing, both with water media and with oil
Dead colouring
Venetian painting/wipe out technique
Weβre also going to cover:
Basic bird anatomy to help understand and simplify the structure of the bird
How to learn from bird painters through history and experiment with their techniques
How to simplify bird drawing in order to be able to sketch birds gesturally from life
How to use photo references without becoming overly reliant on them
There are 4 modules that consist of lectures, slideshows and demos, while the 30 daily homework assignments are designed to lead the student from thumbnail and tonal sketches to fully developed paintings. We will use water media (ink, watercolor and gouache) for the first half of the class, with an option to switch to oil paint for the second half. The classes and prompts are available permanently.
You can stick to water media for the rest of the class, or switch to oil paint if you wish (or both).
I have assignments prepared for both oil painting and water media throughout the rest of the class.
