What to do today:
Today you will begin working on a monochromatic landscape painting based on one of the old master landscape paintings we’ve been looking at during the class (or you can pick a favorite painting of your own)
Take one of the raw or burnt umber prepared panels. Oil out your surface, and begin with a careful line drawing in burnt or raw umber. Block out the major shapes - the silhouettes of the trees against the sky, any major rock formations in the foreground- you can make this drawing as simple or elaborate as you want but generally- the more time you spend in preparation, the easier your actual painting will be.
Once you have your drawing, begin working on the sky using only burnt umber and white. Get the values as accurately as you can without adding color. You can apply the paint with flat brushes, and soften it with a mop brush or any other blending brush.
